The City of Nome was incorporated on April 9, 1901 and operates under
the Council-Manager form of government. The Nome Common Council consists
of 6 elected officials and a Mayor, as the presiding officer.
53 full time employees, supplemented with seasonal employees, serve
3,540 Nome residents. The 2008 General Budget is $9.7 million, and the
Port budget is $977,000. The 2008 mill rate for Nome is 11 mills, and
the City has a 5% sales tax as well as a 6% hotel/motel tax.
The Nome Joint Utility Systems, owned and operated by the City of Nome,
serves the community with electrical, water, and sanitation services.
The Nome Public Schools also operates under the City, providing the
children of Nome with a first class education in grades Kindergarten
- 12th.
Nome is the hub of the Seward Peninsula region. Local, State, and Federal
government services provide the majority of employment. Retail services,
transportation, mining, medical and other businesses provide year-round
income.
Nome seeks to provide services that its citizens want in the most reliable,
cost efficient and effective manner possible and to promote a socially
and economically healthy community.
