The legislative power of the City and all other powers reasonably implied are vested in the City Council. The City Council is composed of six members elected by the voters for designated seats on an at-large basis. The legislative power is described in the Nome Code of Ordinances and subject only to the limitations imposed by the Constitution and laws of the United States and the Constitution and laws of the State of Alaska. The City Council meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month. Council meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers of City Hall at 102 Division Street. The executive power of the City is vested in the mayor. The mayor shall preside at meetings of the City Council. The mayor may take part in the discussion of a matter before the City Council, but may not vote except in the case of a tie. The mayor acts as ceremonial head of the City government, executes official documents on authorization of the City Council, and is responsible for additional duties and powers prescribed by Alaska law. The City of Nome has adopted a manager form of government. |
