  The City of Nome operates and maintains a municipal solid waste landfill (landfill) and an inert waste landfill (monofill) under appropriate ADEC Solid Waste Disposal Permits.

This memo attempts to present information about the municipal landfills and respond to frequently asked questions (FAQ's) about the sites.

    MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION:


  • lead acid batteries are recycled at NAPA Store;
  • greases, paints, contaminated soil are not accepted by the City;
  • sewage sludge, septage and honey bucket wastes are disposed of at the NJUS Wastewater Treatment Plant located on River Street;
  • open burning is prohibited at the sites;
  • hazardous wastes generated by businesses will not be accepted at either landfill.
  • uncontrolled scavenging and salvaging by the public is prohibited.
  • Recycling of wastes is encouraged.

1All vehicles must be held in temporary storage until lead acid batteries, fluids and petroleum products have been removed.

2"Refrigerant Containing Appliance Disposal Policy, 12/97". All white goods containing refrigerants must be held in a temporary storage area at the landfill until CFC's have been removed by a certified technician.

3"Asbestos and Asbestos Containing Materials Disposal Policy, 10/98". Written notificiation required.

4Access to the site is controlled by locked gates at the main road and at the monofill. Keys for the site are strictly controlled. Control of wastes delivered to the site is accomplished by requiring the user to sign the "Disposal Agreement" at City Hall. Random inspection of deposited wastes can be made at any time. A violation of the agreement may cause the user to be responsible for all costs associated with the removal, remediation and final disposal of unacceptable wastes.
