Sunlight/Darkness

The shortest day of the year is December 21st (the winter solstice) with 3 hours and 54 minutes of sunlight.

The daylight increases by approximately six minutes a day until June 21st (summer solstice) when the sun is up for 21 hours and 39 minutes. Technically, the sun does set, but its close proximity to the horizon gives the appearance of 24 hours of daylight from mid-April to mid-August.

How To Dress

The best way to be comfortable is to use the layered look. For summer visits, pack a sweater or two and a coat. Wear them together in the morning and shed a layer or two as needed. Casual attire is appropriate for just about any occasion in Nome. The most important thing is to be sure your clothes are practical and comfortable! Good walking shoes are a must. A water resistant coat is optional. If you are visiting in the fall or winter, bring an extra warm coat, hat, gloves, warm boots and a set of long underwear.
