Summary:

Under direction of Harbormaster, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the repair and operation of the Port & Harbor. Assists in the monitoring of vessel traffic, moorage and scheduling, accumulating necessary billing information and monitoring user compliance with established facility rules and regulations. Routinely works with harbor staff and public works regarding facility maintenance and operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists with scheduling, monitoring and tracking of inbound and outbound vessel traffic; arranging and monitoring use of storage lands and facility activity for billing purposes; communicating with users to schedule facility use; track progress of vessel loading or unloading; enforces user compliance of port rules and regulations; provide a variety of information and contacts to port users concerning local services.
  • Assists with tracking special projects; logging daily activities; monitors marine band VHF radio and cell phone; maintains frequent presence at facility to provide assistance to users; ensures safe use of facility under direction of Harbormaster and assists in necessary maintenance and repairs with the public works crew. Assists in monitoring small vessel moorage fleet's use of facility, identifying potential environmental contamination risks and monitoring user compliance in correcting equipment and/or vessel issues as directed.
  • Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair projects. Assists in tracking inventories on all facility supplies/materials. Assists in fuel transfers and delivering fresh water to customers at facility, connecting & disconnecting hoses as needed, track product quantity, maintain radio contact during transfers and ensure the safe operation and handling of equipment used. Assists in the launching and retrieval of buoys, floating docks, ladders, life rings and life jackets. Assists in keeping port facility and buildings clean of trash and debris.
  • Must be prepared to effectively represent the City in a courteous and respectful manner. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Skills, Abilities, Qualification Requirements:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Must pass background check, have a valid driver's license and be able to obtain a Transportation Worker's Identification Card to be compliant with Federal regulations.

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent.

At least two years related experience required.

Specific Skills and Abilities to the Job:

  • Experience in tracking information; proficient in computer e-mail and internet usage; organizational ski1ls
  • Experience with maritime operations and public relations is desired for dock patrol. Ability to handle small tools for repairs and maintenance tasks. Must be able to safely and properly handle a standard vehicle and tow a trailer when necessary.
  • Previous experience in the operation of small vessel engines, the petroleum products used and their proper disposal is required. Must be able to safely operate a small boat.
