Downtown Rezone
Downtown Rezone: In response to concerns the current zoning regulations for downtown Nome are too restrictive, the City of Nome is moving through a public process to rezone the downtown space. The purpose of the rezoning effort is to revitalize development. The Nome Planning Commission initiated a public process in January 2024 to invite feedback on the geographic boundaries and land uses. A community open house was held in April 2024.
After a year of public consultation, the Nome Common Council will consider a new ordinance for rezoning downtown Nome in 2025. We urge the public to continue to stay involved and provide input for consideration. Public comment is invited at the Nome Planning Commission's upcoming public hearing. The City of Nome encourages public comment at the Nome Common Council Work Session and the Nome Common Council Second Reading. Please see rezoning documents and maps below.
Anticipated Public Process:
- January 13, 2025 NOME COMMON COUNCIL WORK SESSION
- March 24, 2025 JOINT NOME PLANNING COMMISSION and COMMON COUNCIL WORK SESSION
- April 1, 2025 PUBLIC HEARING of the NOME PLANNING COMMISSION
- April 14, 2025 NOME COMMON COUNCIL FIRST READING
- June 9, 2025 NOME COMMON COUNCIL SECOND READING and PUBLIC HEARING
What is Zoning? A zone governs use of a space within a community through local public law, also known as a city ordinance. Zoning laws are defined by the Nome Common Council, in consultation with the public. Zoning is one tool to help implement a community plan and vision.
